Writing: Lena - Chapter 2

So - thought I'd post the second chapter of Lena's story too. Let me know if you're enjoying it?  Could possibly release the first installment of this 2 novella story before the end of May. With this story, I feel like I'm flopping around outside of my comfort zone and although it's uncomfortable, I'm assuming these are 'good' growing pains especially since the gospel is a bit more central than in the last story I put out there.   .2. Picked Up Just before sunrise, clouds lumbered off to the northwest. I shivered in my damp clothing and stepped onto the glistening onyx ribbon of road to consider my options: one, follow it to civilization and risk running into Ted or his crew, or two, risk a slow death by turning from the road into the dehydrating desert. I couldn’t tell how far I was from where I had started, and didn’t want to risk meeting anyone along the road once the sun had fully risen, but before I had made a conscious choice, I heard the grave...

Writing: a little urban fantasy novella

Now that Curse of Royalty is FINALLY published, I've pulled out a strange urban fantasy novella I wrote as an exercise while I was stuck at home in 2020. It's in a very different writing style than what I used for the curse series - a much needed change. I got to explore a few ideas I'd been mulling over and present the gospel in a way that was different than I did in the curse series. Still playing around with what title to use but the story has an interesting twist and end, but it's a little open ended. Was also thinking I might narrate it since it's kind of short - maybe 4 hours long.  Anyway, for those of you who are interested, here is the intro chapter. Will be working on getting this one brushed up enough to publish. I'm super close - might even be able to release in time for summer reads.   .1. Escape A thousand angry ants stung me while I ran from him. Hair whipped me in the wind, sloppy rain-soaked ropes that stuck at odd angles, sometimes partially ...

Writing: Book Progress, Cover Mockups & Free Teaser

Yep - we're getting close. Just wrote the last sentence of my epilogue and now I'm on to formatting. Several people have asked when the next installment of  Curse of Royalty . now I'm so close that I can start planning the release. I'm about to break out the chocolate cake and fireworks. Can't wait to shove this thing out of the nest but I don't want it to be half baked either. Once it's out there, it's out there forever. Thoughts on these cover mockups? Are they eye-catching? Legible?  I'll re-cover the first one and then choose one of these or something that feels like one of these for the physical book that, unless it turns out to be 400+ pages, will have all three volumes included. And brain storm with me? I'm struggling to solidify titles for the next two installments -  Series Title: Curse of Royalty Book 1: Drayden's Queen [pretty much set in stone] Book 2: Abandoned Queen ? Nine Years a Queen ? Book 3: Cursed Queen ?     Other titl...

Book Two: in progress

I think this is why I write... Finally "finished" what I hope is the second to last edit pass for Book Two of the Curse of Royalty series a week or two ago and sent it off to my awesome beta readers. I've already gotten stellar feedback from some of them. Currently, I'm in the middle of working on book three. I'm about 2/3s of the way through the manuscript and am at a standstill because I'm trying to figure out how Anthony will finally admit who he is. I've written and scrapped that scene so many times that I'm unsure how it all should play out (and still lead us down the road to the end scenes I've written). By this time in the story, the reader already knows who he is. They may not know his proper name, but they know who he is - it's just Peydra who is in the dark and needs enlightening. I'm not sure what her reaction should be. I know what mine might be, but I know that wouldn't work for the book.

Book Progress: Vol 1 Cover & Synopsis

Tentative Cover Image for Volume One Last night, I had no words, so instead of beating my head against the wall, I created a cover I'm pretty happy with. Thoughts? Writing almost every day both during my lunch breaks, in the evenings, and on weekends in addition to a hairy busy job... I'm weary. I was so thankful I could rest last weekend, but I'm still dragging so I'm glad it's Friday. There's nothing quite like losing myself in creating the story, in editing what I've written and other such fun bits of writing; however, knowing writing a novel is time consuming, hard, and labor intensive versus actually living through it... well, you don't know what it's really like until you've done it yourself. I mean, I can't tell you guys how many versions I've gone through - versions meaning, drafts of things that include major changes/additions to the previous version.  I have certainly developed a respect for professional writers ...

Coming Soon: Curse of Royalty, Volume One

Curse of Royalty volume one - tentative cover mockup - jfleming 2017 Many who know me well are aware that I enjoy writing stories. God's gifted me with the ability to put those stories down, the time to develop that ability, and it's something I've enjoyed doing since I was a little girl. A few weeks ago, I spent my stay-cation finishing odds and ends after the flood at my house and putting the spit shine on volume one of a book I've been writing off and on for just over twenty years. Yeah - I know what you must be thinking - twenty years? What a loon. But really, I think the totality of what I've written could have been done in less than a year if I'd have had time to focus on it (and enough brain to devote to it). In 2010 I had written myself into a corner - took the story into a direction that I wasn't comfortable with. It was difficult, but after some research and some soul searching (and feed back from readers), I cut the unpalatable story line ...

:: Artists & Creatives :: Copyright Laws to change if...

Artists and Creatives of all types will be affected by what Congress votes on this Thursday, July 23: Copyright Law revisions recommended by the Copyright Office. Those revisions will affect the future of artwork and creative ownership and ultimately will devalue what we do to earn our living and strip us of the rights to our own work. Currently, when you create something - from the moment of creation, what you've created is protected as yours under current copyright law. If these recommended changes pass on Thursday, you will be stripped of your intellectual rights to what you create (past work too) and ownership rights to your artwork will be un-defendable in court. Another part of this bill is that you'll have to register every bit of artwork you create with a "corporate" entity if you want to have any remotely-defensible rights to your own work - if you want to sell your work at all - but it still won't be yours even though you've created it. ...
